A grip that's slightly too large restricts natural wrist hinge and can delay release, since the hands have to work harder to rotate the club through impact. A grip that's slightly too small can let the hands over-rotate, producing an earlier, less controlled release than the golfer intended. Neither problem shows up clearly on a launch monitor alone — both show up immediately on release-timing capture.

Diameter and Its Effect on Release Timing

We size grips first by glove-hand measurement, then confirm with release-timing data captured across a few practice swings at each candidate size. It's common for a golfer's "comfortable" grip size and their most consistent-release grip size to differ by a half-wrap of tape or more — the difference is subtle enough that most golfers never notice it without seeing the timing data side by side.

Texture Matters Almost as Much as Size

A tackier, more aggressive texture lets the hands stay passive longer in the downswing, since less grip pressure is needed to maintain control — this tends to support a later, more consistent release. A smoother, firmer texture often requires slightly more grip pressure throughout the swing, which can pull release timing earlier for some golfers as the hands work harder to control the club face.

Two grips can be the exact same size and still produce different release timing purely from a difference in surface texture.

Where This Shows Up Most

Grip-related release timing shifts are most noticeable on driver and wedge fittings — the driver because clubhead speed magnifies any inconsistency, and the wedge because touch shots demand a very light, consistent grip pressure that texture can either support or work against.
