Shaft Kick Point and Release Timing

Kick point rarely gets discussed outside a fitting bay, but it's often a bigger factor in how a shaft actually plays than the flex letter stamped on it.

Kick point describes the section of a shaft that bends the most under load during the downswing. It's usually described as low, mid, or high, referring to where along the shaft's length that bending concentrates. Two shafts can share an identical flex rating and still have noticeably different kick points, which is part of why "Stiff" from one brand doesn't always play like "Stiff" from another.

Why Kick Point Matters More Once You Know Your Release Timing

A low kick point releases its stored energy earlier in the downswing, which tends to suit a golfer whose own wrist release also happens earlier. A high kick point releases later, closer to impact, suiting a golfer who holds the angle deep into the downswing. When kick point and release timing are mismatched, the shaft either "unloads" before your hands are ready for it, or is still loading after your release has already happened — both produce inconsistent face angle at contact.

What Mismatched Kick Point Looks Like in a Session

Golfers with an early release fit into a high-kick-point shaft often report the club feeling "stiff" or unresponsive, even at a flex rating well matched to their swing speed. Golfers with a late release fit into a low-kick-point shaft often report a "whippy" or unpredictable feel through impact, again despite the flex number looking correct on paper. In both cases, the fix usually isn't a different flex — it's a different kick point at the same flex.

Flex tells you roughly how much a shaft bends. Kick point tells you when. Release timing is what decides which "when" actually fits you.

How We Test for It

During a fitting, once we've established your release-timing baseline, we test shafts across different kick points at a similar overall flex and weight, watching how release timing and face angle at impact shift with each change. The goal is a shaft that unloads right as your release happens, not slightly before or after it.
