Torque Rating and Release Feel
Torque gets less attention than flex, but it has an outsized effect on how a fast release actually feels compared to how it performs on paper.
Torque measures how much a shaft twists around its own axis under load, expressed in degrees. Lower torque numbers mean a stiffer, more resistant shaft under twisting force; higher torque numbers mean more give. It's a separate measurement from flex, which describes bending along the shaft's length rather than twisting around it.
Why Torque Interacts Directly With Release Timing
A fast, aggressive release generates more twisting force on the shaft than a smoother, later release does. A high-torque shaft paired with a fast, early release can twist enough during the downswing to leave the face open at impact, even if the shaft's flex rating matches swing speed correctly. A low-torque shaft paired with a slower, later release can feel stiff and lifeless, since there's little give for the golfer to feel through the hitting zone.
What Mismatched Torque Feels Like
Golfers with a fast release fit into a high-torque shaft often describe the club as feeling "twisty" or inconsistent, especially on off-center strikes. Golfers with a smoother, later release fit into a low-torque shaft often describe the same shaft as feeling "dead" or lacking feedback, even though objectively it's performing within spec.
Torque doesn't show up on a spec sheet as a feel rating, but it's often the reason a correctly-flexed shaft still feels wrong in your hands.
How We Test for It
Once release timing is established, we test a small range of torque ratings at a consistent flex and weight, checking both face angle consistency at impact and the golfer's own feel rating for each option. The goal is a torque number that holds the face stable through your specific release speed without feeling stiff or unresponsive.
